How to Get Gel Nail Extensions
Gel nail extensions are a great alternative to more damaging nail treatments like acrylics. They’re easier to apply, less likely to break and last longer than traditional acrylics.

They’re also a great way to add length and strength to your natural nails while still letting you play with nail art (or paint them, in case of the less-than-natural look). And they are especially good for those who have weak nails or want to avoid getting a filling treatment because they’re a lot lighter and require minimal prep.

The process starts with filing and buffing your natural nails before a nail technician attaches a gel form to the tip of each one. They’ll then seal the top with a clear gel and set them under a light to cure. Once cured, you’ll be ready to wear your new tips, which will typically last two weeks or more before they need a touch-up.

After the appointment, you’ll be responsible for taking care of your gel extensions so they last as long as possible. This includes avoiding hot water, using protective gloves when doing the dishes and rubbing in cuticle oil regularly to keep them strong.

If you do decide to get your own gel nails, make sure to find a salon you trust and one with good reviews. This is important, because a professional will know how to remove your gel nails safely and won’t damage your natural nails, says freelance nail artist Trenna Seney.

While you’re at it, you may also want to invest in a nail polish remover to help you take off any unwanted gel or gel-based color once it’s removed. Many salons offer special gel-removal kits and tools, so be sure to ask your nail tech about them before booking an appointment.

Depending on the brand you’re using, the removal can either be done at home or in the salon. Most experts recommend a nail technician to do the work, because it’s important to get your natural nails re-healthed by removing the gel properly.

You can also use a product called acetone wrap to help your nails soften and peel off the gel. This method isn’t recommended for all brands, however, so check the ingredients before you try it at home.

To remove your gel extensions, a nail tech will file down about 85 percent of the extension and soak off the rest in acetone for 15-20 minutes. Then, they’ll gently scrape away the remaining gel and buff the nails to remove any residue.

The removal process should only take about 40 minutes. But if you don’t follow proper instructions or aren’t confident with the technique, it can take much longer.

While your nail tech is working, you’ll be able to observe the whole process and provide feedback as necessary. You can even request a follow-up appointment to make sure you’re happy with the results.
